Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
